Trait plasticity and trade?offs shape intra?specific variation in competitive response in a foundation tree species

چکیده

The ability to tolerate neighboring plants (i.e. degree of competitive response) is a key determinant plant success in high-competition environments. Plant genotypes adjust their functional trait expression under high levels competition, which may help explain intra-specific variation response. However, the relationships between traits and response are not well understood, especially trees. In this study, we investigated among-genotype associations tree plasticity We manipulated competition intensity experimental stands trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) address covariance competition-induced changes aspects at genotype level. Intraspecific Trait Variation Driven by Plasticity and Ontogeny in Hypochaeris radicata

The importance of intraspecific variation in plant functional traits for structuring communities and driving ecosystem processes is increasingly recognized, but mechanisms governing this variation are less studied. Variation could be due to adaptation to local conditions, plasticity in observed traits, or ontogeny. We investigated 1) whether abiotic stress caused individuals, maternal lines, an...

Intraspecific variation and species coexistence.

We use a two-species model of plant competition to explore the effect of intraspecific variation on community dynamics. The competitive ability ("performance") of each individual is assigned by an independent random draw from a species-specific probability distribution. If the density of individuals competing for open space is high (e.g., because fecundity is high), species with high maximum (o...

Interspecific coordination and intraspecific plasticity of fine root traits in North American temperate tree species

Fine roots play an important role in nutrient and water absorption and hence overall tree performance. However, current understanding of the ecological role of belowground traits lags considerably behind those of aboveground traits. In this study, we used data on specific root length (SRL), fine root diameter (D) and branching intensity (BI) of two datasets to examine interspecific trait coordi...
